Newton vs NDAX: Which Is Actually Cheaper for Canadians?

Last reviewed 25 August 2026 · Fees verified against both platforms · By the CryptoNorth Team

Short answer

NDAX, for almost anyone who trades. It charges a flat 0.20% against Newton’s 1.00% to 1.60% — five to eight times cheaper on the same purchase.[1][2]

Newton’s pull is that both Interac deposits and withdrawals are free, and the app is simpler. Those are real, but small: NDAX’s $1.50 withdrawal fee is trivial next to a fee gap measured in tens or hundreds of dollars per trade.

Both of these pay us

Newton and NDAX both pay CryptoNorth a referral commission, so we earn either way and have no reason to prefer one. The conclusion here rests entirely on published fee schedules you can check yourself in two clicks — the links are in the sources at the foot of this page.

The thing most Canadians get wrong about Newton

Newton built its reputation on “no commission”, and a lot of people still believe it is the cheap option. It is not. It is the most expensive platform of the two by a wide margin, and the cost is in the spread rather than a line item you notice.

Newton’s own fee page lists three tiers: 1.00–1.15% on BTC, ETH and USDC, 1.25–1.45% on the next group, and 1.50–1.60% on everything else.[1] Only the cheapest tier covers the three largest assets. Buy anything further down the list and you are paying closer to 1.6%.

What the gap costs in dollars

$1,000$10 – $16$2$8 – $14
$10,000$100 – $160$20$80 – $140
$50,000$500 – $800$100$400 – $700

Newton’s free withdrawals are its best answer to this, and the arithmetic does not rescue it. NDAX charges $1.50 to withdraw. You would need to make 53 withdrawals before that fee ate the amount you saved on a single $10,000 purchase at Newton’s cheapest tier.

Where Newton genuinely wins

We rate NDAX higher, but this is not a shutout and it would be dishonest to present it as one. One thing that is not a Newton advantage, despite how often it is written up as one: both are CIRO dealers and both are CIPF members — CIRO regulates them the way it regulates stockbrokers, and the Canadian Investor Protection Fund would repay your cash balance if either firm failed. That coverage applies to CAD cash balances at either platform, and to crypto at neither.

  • Free withdrawals both ways. If you move money in and out constantly and trade almost never, Newton can work out cheaper.
  • A simpler app. NDAX exposes order types and a real order book. For a first purchase, some people find that off-putting.
The CryptoNorth verdict

Choose NDAX if you intend to buy more than once. The flat 0.20% is the lowest headline rate of any CSA-authorized platform we cover, and the gap compounds with every trade.

Choose Newton only if you value the simpler interface enough to pay five times more for it, or if your pattern is genuinely deposit-and-withdraw rather than trade. That is a narrow case, and worth being honest with yourself about before you pick.
