Kraken Canada Review 2026

Kraken is one of the oldest crypto exchanges in the world and one of the few with a real Canadian securities registration. It is authorized in every province and territory, including Ontario and Québec. A rolling 12-month net-acquisition cap can still apply, depending on where you live and which assets you buy. Here is what that means for you.

What Is Kraken?

Kraken launched in 2011, making it one of the longest-running cryptocurrency exchanges still operating — a rare distinction in an industry with a long list of collapsed platforms. In Canada, Kraken operates through Payward Canada Inc., which received CSA authorization as a Crypto Asset Trading Platform on April 1, 2025.[1] That registration is the same regulatory bar met by Bitbuy, Newton, and NDAX — the difference is where it applies.

Purchase Limits Depend on Your Province

Kraken is available across Canada. Payward Canada Inc. is registered with FINTRAC and authorized by the CSA as a Restricted Dealer with the Ontario Securities Commission and the securities regulators in every province and territory.[1] The cap that varies by province is a rolling 12-month net-acquisition limit of $30,000 ($100,000 for Eligible Crypto Investors; none for Accredited Crypto Investors) on crypto other than Bitcoin, Ether, Bitcoin Cash and Litecoin, which Kraken exempts from the cap. Everything else counts against it — Solana included. Residents of Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, Quebec and Saskatchewan are exempt from the cap entirely.

Purchase Limits Differ by Province

Kraken is authorized in every province and territory. The $30,000 / $100,000 net-acquisition cap applies only to crypto other than Specified Crypto Assets, and only outside Alberta, BC, Manitoba, Quebec and Saskatchewan. Only Bitcoin, Ether, Bitcoin Cash and Litecoin are outside that cap. Solana and every other asset count towards it. Always double check current status at securities-administrators.ca.

Kraken's Fees, Explained

Kraken runs two separate fee structures depending on which interface you use, and mixing them up is the most common source of confusion for new users.[2]

Kraken Pro
0.40% maker / 0.80% taker (Tier 1)

The advanced order-book trading view. Fees drop as your 30-day volume rises. Best for anyone comfortable placing limit orders instead of clicking "buy."

Kraken App (Instant Buy)
1% per trade

The simple one-tap buy screen. Kraken+ members get this fee waived on up to $10,000 CAD of monthly volume, though the underlying spread and any card-processing fees still apply.

Note: CAD Interac e-Transfer deposits are free; Interac withdrawals cost $10.

Coin Selection and Staking

Kraken lists 400+ cryptocurrencies, far more than any Canadian-native exchange — for comparison, NDAX lists around 50 and Newton 59 CAD pairs. Kraken also offers on-chain staking with no separate fee to stake or unstake; Kraken's cut comes out of the reward itself, and Flexible-term staking allows instant unstaking if you need liquidity back quickly.[2] Payward Canada does not offer margin or derivatives.

Security Track Record

Kraken is one of a small handful of major exchanges with no history of a customer-fund-losing breach since its 2011 launch — notable in an industry where Mt. Gox, FTX, and QuadrigaCX all collapsed with customer funds missing. Kraken also regularly publishes cryptographic proof-of-reserves. That track record does not eliminate risk — no exchange is risk-free, and crypto held on any exchange is not covered by CDIC — but it is a meaningfully different starting point than most competitors.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Kraken legal to use in Ontario or Quebec?

Yes. Payward Canada Inc. (Kraken) is a FINTRAC-registered MSB and a CSA restricted dealer authorized in all 13 provinces and territories, including Ontario and Québec, with a rolling 12-month net-acquisition cap of $30,000 ($100,000 for Eligible Crypto Investors; none for Accredited Crypto Investors) on crypto other than Bitcoin, Ether, Bitcoin Cash and Litecoin that applies to clients outside Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, Québec and Saskatchewan. Solana is not exempt. Quebec residents are in the exemption group; Ontario residents are not, except for Specified Crypto Assets.

Is Kraken good for crypto beginners?

Kraken Pro is built for active traders and has a steeper learning curve than Bitbuy or Shakepay. The simplified Kraken app narrows that gap but still charges a higher 1% fee. Interac deposits are free; withdrawals cost $10.

Does Kraken support CAD and Interac e-Transfer?

Yes. CAD Interac e-Transfer deposits are free; Interac withdrawals cost $10.

Is my crypto insured on Kraken?

No. Like every exchange operating in Canada, crypto held on Kraken is not covered by CDIC. Kraken's long security track record and proof-of-reserves practices reduce — but do not eliminate — platform risk.
